Community Spotlight: Porter Barn Wood

Howdy, y’all!

If you’ve been to our Pinterest page lately, or if you’ve checked out our recent Project on Gardenia, you’ll see how ob-sessed we are with the rustic barn wood trend. Obsessed! It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what it is that we love so much: the warm tones, the intricate grain, the way a simple gloss can make a piece of simple, rustic beam come to life as a sturdy mantle framing a fireplace. Swoon!

We have a couple of custom projects in our home that we cannot get enough of. Most recently, we jacked up some old shelving and did our own DIY rustic shelving, that ended up beautifully! Our other favorite piece is a thick slab of juniper that we fastened hairpin legs to, and it makes a gorgeous side table to our living room set. But perhaps are most coveted piece is our dining room table.

Measuring 6 feet long and 3 feet wide, our table top is made of two big slabs of cyprus (so fun to say!), that are glued together seamlessly. The coolest part about this table is the live edge, where the side of the knotted, gnarled tree was left in all it’s glory. The table base is made of two large, custom steel A-frame pieces, with a 3/4″ pipe running along the length between the two for stability. It is perfection, and always a talking piece with visitors!

Where. did. you. get. this??” Without a doubt, always the question we get asked when our guests admire this piece of art!

We didn’t buy it anywhere. We created it, (mostly) with the help of an amazing local company that I am so excited to share with you all!

Enter in… Porter Barn Wood!

Porter Barn Wood is one of our most favorite local businesses! Led by Thomas Porter himself, they source used barn wood, antiqued doors and shutters, and old patina-stained metal pieces from all around the Arizona and the rest of the country. Then, they bring all of this amazing product back to their giant yard in Downtown Phoenix, where eager customers can choose different pieces and work together with the team to create fabulously unique projects.

Fancy yourself more on the industrial side of design? You’re in enormous luck, because Porter Barn Wood recently underwent a major expansion and took over an old ironworks shop. Now, not only can they provide you with wicked wood products, they can also finish just about any design you can ever dream up, with the help of skilled iron craftsmen.

The quality of work that Porter Barn Wood offers is just unbeatable. So much so, that you may even recognize a few of their pieces from these photos. That’s because other local businesses – like us – love them, too! Thomas and his team have done amazing projects for businesses here in Arizona like Fà-me Caffe, Lucky Strike (that zinc bartop featured above!), The Grove, Kaleidoscope Juice, The Yard on Central, and the list goes on, and on, and ON.

If you’ve never been, we suggest you take a stroll through their shop yard to see what they are all about. At their Downtown Phoenix location, you’ll find literally piles of wood and metal product, a beautiful showroom, and their iron works shop. Say “Hi” to Thomas and the crew there, and prepare yourself for some serious barnwood inspo!

The photos featured on this blog don’t even begin do them justice on their work. Be sure to at least check out their website at www.porterbarnwood.com, and their Instagram page at @porterbarnwood.
